SEARCH FOR AN INTERNSHIP
Internships give you real-world experience, help you build professional skills, and expand your network. They can also help you test-drive a career path before committing to it. START EARLY—IT CAN TAKE SEVERAL MONTHS TO A YEAR TO LAND AN INTERNSHIP THAT ALIGNS WITH YOUR GOALS AND PERSONAL PREFERENCES!
Before you search, know what you’re looking for:
- Career Goals: What field or role do you want to explore?
- Skills & Interests: What are you good at, and what excites you?
- Logistics: Consider location, remote options, schedule, and pay.
Don’t limit yourself to one platform—combine resources:
- University Career Center: Use Handshake, attend career fairs, and meet with academic and career advisors.
- Online Job Boards: Handshake, LinkedIn, Indeed, Internships.com, WayUp.
- Company Websites: Check “Careers” pages of organizations you admire.
- Professional Associations: Many have exclusive student job boards.
- Networking: Ask professors, classmates, alumni, and family.
- Informational Interviews: Reach out to alumni or professionals to learn about their work.
- LinkedIn: Connect with industry professionals and follow companies.
- Events: Attend career fairs, guest lectures, and networking events.
- Tailor your résumé and cover letter for each role.
- Highlight relevant coursework, projects, and skills—even if you lack direct experience.
- Apply early—internships often fill months in advance.
Keep a spreadsheet of applications, deadlines, and follow-up dates. This prevents missed opportunities.
- Practice answering common questions (“Tell me about yourself,” “Why this company?”).
- Research the company thoroughly.
- Have examples ready that show problem-solving, teamwork, and initiative.
After interviews, send a thank-you email within 24 hours. This reinforces your interest and professionalism.
QUICK TIP
Treat the internship search like a part-time job—set aside time weekly to research, apply, and network.
