Your resume is often your first impression with potential employers. It should be clear, concise, and tailored to the position you’re applying for. Follow these tips to create a strong and effective resume:
1. Contact Information
Include your full name, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn profile (optional).
Example:
Jane Smith | janesmith@email.com | (123) 456-7890 | linkedin.com/in/janesmith
2. Summary or Objective (Optional)
A brief 1–2 sentence statement summarizing your career goals and what you bring to the role.
Example:
Motivated marketing student with strong communication skills and internship experience seeking a summer marketing assistant role.
3. Education
List your most recent education first. Include:
- University name with city and state
- Degree spelled out (e.g., Bachelor of Arts in Psychology)
- Expected graduation date Month Year
- Grade point average
- Relevant coursework or honors (optional)
4. Experience
Include jobs, internships, leadership roles, and volunteer work. For each, list:
- Job title
- Organization name and location
- Dates of involvement
- 2–4 bullet points describing your accomplishments and responsibilities using action verbs

Highlight relevant skills such as:
- Technical (e.g., Microsoft Office, Canva, SPSS)
- Language proficiency (only if conversant or fluent)
- Soft skills (e.g., teamwork, time management) — only if backed by relevant experience
- Keep it to one page (unless you have extensive experience).
- Use bullet points and action verbs like “developed,” “organized,” “led,” “created.”
- Tailor your resume for each job by aligning your experiences with the job description.
- Use consistent formatting and a clean, easy-to-read font.
- Proofread carefully to eliminate typos or grammatical errors.
